We shall show them Our signs on the horizons and within themselves until it will be manifest to them that it is the Truth. Does your Lord not suffice, since He is Witness over all things?

How! Are they still in doubt about the meeting with their Lord? Is not He surrounding all things? SURAH FUSSILAT (41:53-54)

7 Heavens and The Arsh Kursi Of Allah

The question is how Big are you?
Spaceship EarthDid you know?
Our Earth really does travel through space like a spaceship. It orbits the Sun at 67,000 miles per hour/108,000 kilometres per hour (30 km/sec), that is about 60 times speed of bullet. At the same time Earth and our solar system are moving at speed of  720,000 kilometres/hour (200km/sec). Spaceship Earth travels over 574 million miles/924 million kilometres every year.

The universe has been expanding since its creation. Scientists believe this vast space is about 90 billion years across.

Did you know? In the Qur'an, which was revealed fourteen hundred years ago at a time when the science of astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described in the Qur’an revealed to prophet Muhammad SAW :

With the power and skill did We construct the Firmament: For it is We Who expand the vastness of Space. [Al Dhariyat 51:47]

Until the dawn of the 20th century, the only view prevailing in the world of science was that "the universe has a constant nature and it has existed since infinite time." However, modern research, observations, and calculations carried out by means of modern technology have revealed that the universe in fact had a beginning and that it constantly "expands." In the Qur’an it says:

It is He Who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: All (the celestial bodies) swim along, each in its rounded course. [Al Anbiya 21:33]

It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (According to Law). [Ya Sin 36:40]

Now, this is really fascinating. These images show the size of Earth compared to some other planets in our solar system.

Earth compared to some other planetsour solar systemsize of Sun

The Sun is big! It is about 106 times wider than the Earth, and about 1,300,000 Earths would fit inside the Sun. Light from the Sun takes only 8.3 minutes to reach the Earth. Light from other stars take years to reach. The distance of the Sun from Earth is 93,000,000 miles/150,000,000 km. The Sun and Solar Systems are about 26,000 light years from the centre of our galaxy, the Milky Way.

Stars are so far away that measuring their distance in kilometres or miles gives numbers too big to understand. Instead, we use light years. A light year is the distance travelled by light in one year (5,903,000,000,000 miles/9,500,000,000,000 kilometres in a single year). So, one light year is 5.9 million million miles/9.5 million million kilometres (more than 300,000 km per second). A light year is a big distance. Even so, the stars are many light years away. The nearest, Proxima Centauri is 4.2 light years away – that’s almost 25 million million miles/40 million million kilometres! Other stars are tens, hundreds, even thousands light years away.

Did you know?
Endless UniverseThe nine planets (and the distance) known and named by modern scientists are only a part of our Solar System.   In fact, the Solar System, the Milky Way, and all the other millions of heavenly bodies and galaxies that are identified or discovered by man through the use of modern science are only a part of the first of the seven heavens mentioned by Allah (swt) in the Glorious Qur’an.   It is the consensus of the modern astronomers and scientists that to the best of their knowledge, even these heavenly bodies are in their terms, ‘endless’!

Some reference from the Qur’an:

Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, [Al-Fatihah 1:2]

We have adorned the lowest heaven with an ornament, the stars; [As-Saffat 37:6]

So He completed them as seven firmaments in two Days and He assigned to each Heaven its duty and command. And We adorned the lower heaven with lights and (provided it) with guard. Such is the Decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, full of knowledge. [Fussilat 41:12]

See ye not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another. [Nuh 71:15]

…and His Throne was over the Waters… [Hud 11:7]

…His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth… [al-Baqarah 2:255]

And the angels will be on its sides and eight will that Day bear the Throne of thy Lord above them. [Al-Haqqah 69:17]

Say: "Who is the Lord of the Seven Heavens and the Lord of the Throne (of Glory) Supreme?"
They will say, "(They belong) to Allah." Say: "Will ye not then be filled with awe?" [Al Mu’minun 23:86-87]

He is Allah:  The Creator, The Evolver, the Bestower of Forms.  To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names: Whatever is in the heavens and on earth, doth declare His Praises and Glory, and He is the Exalted in Might, The Wise. [Al Hashr 59:24]

Some reference from the Hadiths:

It was narrated that the Prophet told us about one of the angels who carries the ‘Arsh. He said that the distance between that angel’s ear lobe and his shoulder is equivalent to a seven hundred year journey. [Abu Dawood]

Narrated Al-Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib
…The heaven which is above it is at a similar distance (going on till he counted seven heavens). Above the seventh heaven there is a sea, the distance between whose surface and bottom is like that between one heaven and the next… [Sunan of Abu Dawood, Hadith no. 2205]

Narrated Abu Hurayrah
…He then asked, “Do you know what is between you and it?” On their replying that Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) knew best, he said, “Between you and it are five hundred years.” He then asked, “Do you know what is above that?” On their replying that Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) best he said, “Two heavens with a distance of five hundred years between them. He went on speaking like that till he counted seven heavens, the distance between each pair being like between Heaven and Earth. He then asked, “Do you know what is above that?” On their replying that Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) knew best, he said, “Above that is the Throne, and the distance between it and the (seventh) heaven is the same as that between each pair of heavens… and nothing is hidden from Allah of your deeds. [Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith no. 1513]

Did you know?  When Allah declares about the creation of the Seven Heavens, He is not alluding to the planets of our Solar System, which only constitute a tiny part of even the boundary of our Earth!

Benefits Derived from the above information (hadiths and Qur’an ayats) we find that the distance between Earth and the first heaven is 500 years apart. Between first heaven and second heaven the distance is 500 years. Second heaven to third heaven again 500 years distance and so on until seventh heaven. The seven heavens are separate from each other. From seventh heaven to Kursi (footstool) another 500 years distance. Kursi to the ocean (water) another 500 years in distance. Finally, evidence of the existence of the the ‘Arsh (Throne) is above the ocean (water) and the evidence of the immense angels carrying the ‘Arsh (Throne) and proof of its size the distance between that angel’s ear lobe and his shoulder is equivalent to a 700 year journey. You know the distance that can be covered in 500 years, at what speed? Only Allah knows.

Let’s not forget that when we see any stars with our own eyes, using a pair of binoculars or the use of powerful telescope in the world, it is just another star of the lowest heaven.

Our whole universe isn’t even within these heavens, we are in the dimensions of the Earths, can you even begin to comprehend the size of Allah’s throne? Subhan’ Allah.

DesertRasool SAW has given us an example from a hadith just to give us a little bit of understanding with regards to the seven heavens in comparison to the Kursi of Allah. The seven heavens are no more in comparison to the Kursi (footstool) than a ring taken from your finger and thrown in a vast desert (the ring = 7 heavens and Kursi = desert). For a second just imagine you thrown a ring in a Sahara desert. See the picture, how Big it is…

Again the Kursi is no more in comparison to the ‘Arsh (Throne) than a ring taken from your finger and thrown in a vast desert (this time Kursi = ring and ‘Arsh = desert). They are both immense, too immense that our mind will not comprehend. Humbling, isn’t it? Now, the question is how Big are you? How big are the things that upset you today? And finally, did you wonder how Big is your ALLAH? Want to know the purpose and why we here? Read the Glorious Qur’an…click here to download

Let’s not forget that this fact was explained in the Qur'an fourteen century ago in a time when telescopes and similar technological advancements were not even close to being invented. This is because the Qur'an is the Word of Allah (swt), the Creator and Ruler of the entire universe. Allah's Knowledge encompasses all things.

Now that you have a great big picture in your head, but its blurry. Watch the videos and in-sha-allah the picture will become clearer.

All praises and thanks are due to Allah the Lord of the worlds. Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength. May Allah forgive our sins with his Infinite Mercy, Aameen.
